In the remote mountains of Luang Prabang's Viengkham district, ethnic minority youth are trapped in a cycle of slash-and-burn farming and poverty. Though full of dreams and determination, they lack the opportunities and resources to break free. Wonders International is equipping local young people with agricultural entrepreneurship training-giving them the skills, mentorship, and confidence to start small businesses and build sustainable futures.
Ethnic minority communities in Laos live in isolated mountain villages, relying on slash-and-burn farming to survive. This method is exhausting, destructive to the environment, and produces barely enough rice to eat, leaving families with no stable income. Many young people migrate to cities for low-paying, unstable jobs in hotels or restaurants, only to return home discouraged. Even those who pursue higher education often face unemployment and end up back in the fields-trapped in the same cycle
Wonders International is helping young people turn crisis into opportunity. We provide ethnic minority youth with training in agricultural management and entrepreneurship, and support them in starting small-scale businesses in their home villages. Beyond theory, participants gain practical experience by developing real business plans and taking part in startup idea contests. Through this process, they build the capacity to identify and pursue stable income-generating opportunities on their own.
This project provides sustainable alternatives for young people in rural Laos who once had no options beyond poverty and slash-and-burn farming. By building awareness and practical skills in market-oriented agriculture, it equips youth with an entrepreneurial mindset to identify and pursue income opportunities. As young agripreneurs establish sustainable small businesses in their villages, they strengthen local economies, reduce harmful farming practices, and create hope for future generations.
