Borewell Completion Celebration

Bridgit Water Foundation’s Andhra Pradesh project has significantly reduced the daily burden of water collection for families in Adavicherlopalli village, where access to safe water had been lost for nearly a year due to a broken borewell. Prior to the intervention, women and children were forced to walk 3–4 kilometers each day to collect water, often spending hours waiting at distant and unreliable sources. With the successful restoration of the community borewell, clean and safe drinking water is now available within approximately 300 meters of households, dramatically easing this physical and time-intensive task for 155 households and around 850 people.

The impact of this reduced burden is profound, particularly for women and girls who traditionally bear the responsibility of water collection. Families are now saving an estimated 4–5 hours each day—time that can be redirected toward childcare, education, and income-generating activities. Children are attending school more regularly, no longer delayed or absent water collection duties, while adults are able to increase their participation in farming and other livelihood opportunities. This shift not only improves household incomes but also supports long-term poverty alleviation by freeing up time for more productive and meaningful pursuits.

Beyond time savings, the project has strengthened community resilience and well-being. Ready access to safe water has improved hygiene practices and reduced the incidence of waterborne diseases, while the establishment of a local Water User Committee ensures ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the borewell. By placing water closer to home, the project has helped restore dignity, reduce physical strain, and create lasting change in daily life. Ultimately, alleviating the burden of water collection has unlocked opportunities for healthier, more stable, and more empowered communities.
