Since November 2022, 12 parrot rangers have been working on monitoring parrot nests and conducting population surveys near Kalebaskreek Village in Suriname and also along the rivers and creeks in the village’s territory. They are documenting seasonal variations in the occurrence of various parrot species in this region, as in May, June, and July the numbers around the village tend to increase dramatically after the breeding season. Importantly, the parrot rangers report that there has been much less trapping since they began shifting their emphasis from engaging in the wildlife trade to conservation.
The parrot rangers rescued one blue-and-yellow macaw chick that fell from her nest. She would not have survived if the rangers had not cared for her and now, thankfully, she is flying free. Future project activities include distributing uniforms and cameras to the parrot rangers, offering them more training, and summarizing any data they collect.
