Magical Classroom

It is very important to have clean water in order to obtain a healthy quality of life, and we know this at Aula Mágica, which is why we are concerned about the access that our children have in our classrooms.

Unfortunately in the communities our children live in, they do not always have access to drinking water, so common sources of obtaining water include municipal water sources, wells, and even rivers or lakes. This can be harmful for one’s health, and many of the water sources in Guatemala often do not meet the necessary requirements to be considered optimal and healthy for human consumption.

Why is it important to have water in our magical classrooms? Our children and facilitators use water for many different activities, as well as preparing snacks, washing fruits, drinking water directly and washing hands. Our nutritional drink to combat early childhood malnutrition is prepared with water, and having a safe water source is especially important to us. Our goal is to eventually have water filters in all of our classrooms.

Fortunately, the organizations “Go Philanthropic” and “Miracles in Action” have been a great help in assisting us to achieve this goal: they have provided water purification filters for our schools in Huehuetenango, Quiché, Santa Rosa and Sololá. The filters last for 10 years, and are very easy to use and easy to wash. We are deeply grateful to these organizations for providing us with this opportunity to improve the quality of water consumed by all our children and facilitators. Aula Mágica Guatemala, a new way to teach and learn.

Getting to know Jonathan - one of our students at Magical Classroom, Guatemala.

Jonathan joined our program in 2019 when he was aged just three years and seven months. He lives in the area of Sololá in Guatemala. Jonathan was a very inquisitive child, but found difficulty carrying out activities using his motor skills and this led to significant frustration when he could not do what he wanted to. However, during his first year with us, Jonathan gradually developed his motor skills, made many friends, and got involved in activities without the shyness that he had previously showed. Similarly, as time in the classroom advanced, so did his abilities in school presentations and dances.

Jonathan began 2020 with a great deal of positivity and enjoyed many new experiences. Even though the Covid pandemic posed numerous challenges in terms of education, our teacher, Rosario, visited Jonathan on a daily basis to continue supporting him, his education and making sure he was reaching his full potential. He was now carrying out more activities with images and letter, and when he had turned just four years of age, he participated in a storytelling competition at municipal level, and he finished in fourth place. It was truly a marvellous experience for Jonathan.

In 2021, Jonathan turned five and he was proving unstoppable. He helped his classmates practise and revise the alphabet because he knew all of the letters, and he helped his friends in their school tasks once he had completed his own. He got to know all of the books which were in the classroom including all the names of the different authors. He also learnt mathematics skills such as addition and subtraction.  

This year, 2022, at the age of six, Jonathan started attending the local state school. He can now depend on a strong educational base which will allow him to develop his learning, and achieve further success in the future.

We certainly wish all the very best to Jonathan, who’s certainly a very loving, responsible and cheerful young man.
