Intercultural Health Initiatives for Summer 2018

By Charlotte Biren | Communications Coordinator

We are arming a team of Shipibos, Peruvians, and international specialists to further our public health campaigns this summer. This summer, we are welcoming Nora Reategui from Paoyhan to become an official health promoter in her home community of Paoyhan. We are also welcoming a research team with advanced students from different universities to help put on female health awareness campaigns in the coming month.

To start with, the team will gather the information needed to execute a maternal health campaign that will support mothers and their newborns. This health campaign will be supported with workshops, health examinations, and focus groups for women to seek specialized care.

Our co-coordinators have been working hard to provide opportunities for women to learn about alternative prevention and traditional Shipibo medicine. This is a coordinated community effort that is working alongside the 'Farmacia Viva' project we have that is reforesting medicinal plants in a communal botanical garden. We are excited to integrate more traditional healers into the team and have them also involved in the reforestation of medicinal plants in the community of Paoyhan.
