Expanding Digital Opportunities in Adaklu

By Christina Randazzo | Friends of Adaklu Volunteer

Thanks to your generous support, the Friends of Adaklu Computer and Digital Literacy Program continues to grow and create meaningful opportunities for students across rural communities in the Volta Region of Ghana. Today, 82 students from six schools are enrolled in weekly computer classes, including Tsrefe Basic, Goefe Basic, Abuadi Basic, Helekpe Basic, Kordiabe Basic, and Dawanu Basic. Attendance has improved significantly compared with previous groups, and we believe the bicycles donated through FOA are helping many students reach the Good Life Center more consistently.

Each week, six computer classes are offered where students learn foundational computer skills together at the same level. Beyond these classes, students are also exploring online learning. At the Good Life Center, 126 students use the Learning Upgrade platform each week, while 72 students participate at Dawanu, bringing the total to 198 students gaining digital learning experience every week. We are especially encouraged by the strong participation of girls, who make up 54% of the computer classes and 57% of Learning Upgrade users.

Technology access remains essential to this work. Currently, 9 laptops are operating at the Good Life Center and 13 desktop computers are available at Dawanu. With the addition of Starlink internet, connectivity is stable whenever power is available, opening new doors for students to access online learning tools and digital skills. Through FOA’s partnership with Our Future Prize, Learning Upgrade, and SpaceX Starlink for Good, 95 schools across five regions in Ghana are now connected to reliable internet, creating ripple effects far beyond our local program.

Of course, there are still challenges. A few laptops need repair or replacement, several computers require Microsoft Office licenses for students to complete projects, and some older desktop computers at Dawanu are slowing down learning activities. We also continue working with families to reduce student absenteeism caused by household chores or football training.

Looking ahead to the next three months, our goals include issuing certificates to students who complete the course and enrolling a new group of learners eager to build digital skills. With additional funding, we hope to repair existing laptops, purchase new computers for both the Good Life Center and Dawanu, and provide extra chargers so more students can participate.

Your support is helping students in rural Ghana gain the digital skills needed for the future, opening doors that once seemed far out of reach. Thank you for being part of this journey and for believing in the potential of these remarkable young learners.

Together, we are building opportunity, confidence, and hope through technology.
