A Game That Sparked More Than Cheers: Children's First Step Into the Ballpark

By Lu Yue | TFT ER Team

Have you ever felt the thrill of stepping into a stadium for the very first time—the lights, the crowd, the cheers echoing all around you?

For many children, such a moment can feel out of reach. But thanks to your generosity, on July 22, a group of students experienced that joy for the very first time.

At Teach For Taiwan, we support over 120 teachers serving in rural communities every year. With your help, we also open doors to experiences beyond the classroom—moments that inspire courage, resilience, and hope.

This summer, through a special partnership with the TSG Hawks baseball team, children not only attended a professional game but also interacted with the players themselves. It was more than just a game—it was a lesson in perseverance, teamwork, and dreaming big.

Anticipation Beyond the Classroom

What does excitement look like when it can’t be contained?

Before the event, the students could hardly wait. Their teacher, TFT 9th Cohort alumnus Hung-Yu Lin, shared how even during math lessons, the children calculated player stats, and in their assignments they wrote about their hopes of seeing the game in person.

One student told us: “When you face setbacks in a game, don’t give up—because never giving up is true victory.”

A First Step Into the Ballpark

For most of the children, this was their very first time entering such a grand stadium. Wide-eyed with curiosity, they nervously asked the players questions during the Q&A session, their voices filled with both excitement and awe.

When the game began, the energy of the crowd swept them away. Some waved cheering sticks in rhythm with the chants; others proudly raised handmade posters to shout encouragement for the Hawks. And when their long-awaited idols finally stepped onto the field, their joy could not be hidden.

Lessons That Last Beyond the Game

On the way home, the children couldn’t stop talking about what they had experienced:

  • “The most unforgettable part was watching Mo Ying overcome sadness and still contribute to the team.”

  • “This was my first time seeing such an amazing game in a real stadium. I hope one day we can play baseball too.”

The cheers and the atmosphere lit a spark in their hearts. For some, it was the birth of a new dream—to one day step onto the field themselves.

More Than a Game—A Lesson in Life

Thanks to your support, this event became so much more than just a day at the ballpark.. It became a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience outside the classroom—one filled with courage, teamwork, and inspiration.

Your generosity gave children not only the chance to watch their heroes play, but also the belief that they, too, can overcome challenges and chase their dreams.

If you’d like to see how learning continues beyond the classroom, we invite you to stay connected—through our website, Instagram, and Facebook, where stories of courage, opportunity, and care continue to unfold.

For Teach For Taiwan, these moments are made possible through long-term, recurring support. Monthly donations allow us to keep supporting teachers, creating meaningful learning experiences, and responding to children’s needs year after year. Your sustained commitment helps ensure that opportunities like this are not one-time events, but part of a lasting journey of learning and growth for children in rural communities.
