We are always grateful when volunteers give our students
exposure to things beyond academics. Marlana, a long time
volunteer, organized a trip to art studios for Coimbatore
school students.
They first visited the Collective Studio, featuring works by
Sutanu Panigrahi. The students also saw examples of Gond
art, acrylic paintings by other artists, crafts from waste
materials, danglers and unique clothing pieces. Marlana
explained the stories behind the paintings and explained
about the effects of textures, patterns and colours. She also
encouraged the students express their impressions.
Later they visited the Kasthuri Sreenivasan Art Gallery where
paintings from different countries and idols made of metals
were on display. Numerous exhibits about the textile industry,
antique clothing, embroidery, weaving, dress codes and
painting on textiles along with examples of weaving machines
from the past caught the attention of the students. They also
learnt about the process of thread-making and how it was
converted in to patterns. The interactive session with a guide
clarified their doubts.
The trip helped the students learn more about Indian art and
traditional crafts.
