IV grade students and teachers of the Tuticorin school went on a
field trip to Panchalankurichi. Panchalankurichi is a small historic
village, best known as the birthplace of Veerapandiya Kattabomman,
an 18th-century warrior, known as ‘Paalayakaarar’ in Tamil language.
He opposed the British colonial rule in India and their tax collecting
methods.
After going on the guided tour, the group met with great grandson of
'Veerapandiya Kattabomman' who shared details and stories about
the fort.
After this, they went to the Jakkamal temple and the home of the
Indian freedom fighter and owner of several ships V.O. Chidambaranaar,
fondly called as V.O.C. Students learnt about the leader through the
photos exhibited at his home.
This was followed by a relaxed lunch and return back to the school.
Shares T.Inithashri of IV grade:
We went on a field trip to Panchalakurichi. We saw the Kattabomman
Palace. In the palace, there were many pictures of Kattabomman.
Under each picture, they have written about that picture. At the centre
of the palace, there was a big Kattabomman’s statue. One person
explained about the history of Kattabomman. We liked Kattabomman’s
palace very much. Then, we visited the Jakkammal Temple. Next, we
went to V.O.Chidambaranar's home. We saw that V.O.C. statue is
golden in colour. There were many photos about V.O.C. that were
covered with glass. We understood many things in the field trip. This
is our third field trip. We enjoyed it very much!
Such field trips educate the students about the history and background
of the land and its leaders!
