Dharmapuri school conducted the 'Sounds around us'
activity in order to make the students listen and
pay attention to the day-to-day sounds that happen
around us. Activities were planned to inclue lessons
on awarenss, identification, hygiene, animals and
more.
Rohini, teacher for grade two, section B, kicked off
the theme by showing videos of market place, factory,
street vegetable market, roadside restaurant etc.
After the screening she asked students to name the
sounds they had heard. Kids could identify sound of
vehicles, machines, human interactions at the
vegetable market.
To bring more awareness about sounds around us, she
planned to enact scenes of market and railway
station. Students were asked to get fruits, vegetable,
toys to bring authenticity in the scene.
Market and railway station scene were recreated using
the props brought by the students. In the marketplace
scene, students played the role of vegetable vendors
flower vendors, fruits vendors while they arranged
themselves as toy vendor, newspaper vendor and
passengers in the railway station scene. Students,
who were playing vendors, tried selling by calling
out "Please come to my shop, fruits and vegetables
are very fresh, come and buy in my shop."
Few students formed a train which imitated by
creating the sound 'tadak tadak'. The students playing
passengers were asked to buy from the toy vendor and
paper sellers, normally seen on the platforms.
After finishing with the enactment of these scene,
Rohini discussed about the sounds which they heard
in these places.
Students were also taken to the wash area where a
tap was opened to fill a bucket with water. Rohini
explained about the sounds heard while washing
utensils, filling the bucket etc. They were also
taken to the school bus to hear the sound of horn
and gear changing.
Students also made sounds of animals they were
assigned!
"I planned this activity to make my students to
know the sounds in and around them. I involved the
students as buyer and seller so that they can knew
the sounds in that places. Then I asked the students
to give the animal's sound to make this activity
very interesting, while making the sounds they
connected with the LCD story that they learnt in the
class. By doing all these activities they came to
know the sounds in around our surroundings. They
eagerly participated & enjoyed very much."
