Did you know that shopping is an important skill that the
students need to learn? While shopping, the children get
to know many sub-skills of checking out various options, their
prices, deciding whether they need a particular item or not,
communicating with the shopkeeper, negotiating the price,
transacting the correct amount to buy the item, and so on.
Keeping this in mind, the Tuticorin school teachers had
organised 'Shops and Stalls' activity, where the 2nd grade
students themselves played out the buyers and sellers
activities!
The aim of the activity was to learn some maths, gain
knowledge about various shops and their routines, improve
communication skills as the students try buying and selling.
The stall-like setups were made in the classroom. Teachers
brought items like sweets, flowers, and stationary items which
were used in the stalls. Some teachers brought money, and
cooked food items like vada, adhirasam, bajji, etc., which were
sold in the stalls!
Students visited the stalls, asked for the prices, bargained
and negotiated, and bought some items. And the students
who were acting as the shopkeepers were trying to push for
better prices! The day was a lot of fun. The students and
the teachers enjoyed the activity equally, and the learning
objects of the maths and the communication skills were met!
Such activities increase the exposure of the students to the
day to day life, and also makes learning fun! We would love
your thoughts on what you felt about this activity. Please give
us your feedback through email to the email address mentioned
above, or leaving a comment on this project report. Thank you!
