Dear Patrons,
Sridevi, an English teacher at the Dharmapuri School, designed
a simple yet effective activity to teach singular-plural rules to
4th-grade students. The activity helped children in understand
singular and plural grammatical constructs. Boxes were drawn
on the floor with labels of rule 1, rule 2, up to Rule 6. The teacher
went through the rules and made sure that everyone understood
them.
The students were then asked to walk in a circle around the boxes.
When the teacher called out the words, which were both singular
and plural form of the same word, students were asked to choose
a box and then stand in the box. They chose the box based on the
rule applied to point to the plural word. Those who chose the wrong
rule ended up in the wrong box and were eliminated from the game.
Several words were called out with rules of varying difficulties to give
students practice. The students enjoyed the activity very much and
participated eagerly. We are pretty sure that they grasped the
concepts of singular and plural forms of words by doing this activity.
