Dharmapuri School’s science teacher, Mr. Vijayarajkumar, brought
awareness about the importance of agriculture, farmers and also water
saving agricultural practices among his 8th-grade students.
Vijayarajkumar shares:
"I selected our school kitchen garden area to give hands-on
feel during the lesson. We started with doing basic preparation works
like loosening the soil, removing weeds and small stones. I asked few
questions related to agriculture and the problems which the farmers were
facing in their daily life. Students gave various reasons but they all accepted
that “water was the main problem. I described water saving irrigation
methods. I talked about the basic preparatory steps in the agriculture field
for getting good yield and using water efficiently. One of the students was
excited to take the newly acquired knowledge to his father and motivate him
to try them to save water! I reminded the students about the importance of
food to sustain life and slowly few spoke about becoming a farmer!
I motivated them to find solutions to the problems that farmers are facing
now so that they can do their work with dignity and enthusiasm.”
Varsha of 8th grade at the Dharmapuri school shares:
"I am Varsha studying in 8th standard at Isha Vidhya Dharmapuri school.
I feel we have improved a lot in technology though we have not been able
to invent water, I realise how many problems people face especially the
agricultural sector. I was not aware of the water crisis that most people are
facing until this activity; now I wish to teach the farmers methods to save
water. I have implemented the methods at home in the garden, near the
washing area and hope to plant a sapling every month."
Ekalaivan, 8th grade shares. "Many methods have been discovered to
conserve water, yet people waste water. If this situation continues we will
have to beg for food. In the future I will invent new methods to save water.
I have implemented this at home and planted a few saplings as we have
water shortage. "
We are attaching a few photos from the activity!
