One in sixty Zimbabweans are in need of palliative care services. This is due to a high HIV prevalence rate of 15%, a rising multi-drug resistant tuberculosis burden, and an increased burden of non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer. Moreover approximately 113.3 per 10,000 children are in need of palliative care with less than 1% actually receiving such care.
On 14 November 2017 the Zimbabwe Defence Forces seized control of the government which had ruled for four decades. During this tumultuous period Island Hospice & Healthcare continued to provide palliative care services to patients’ and their families both at home, in hospital and within the community despite the socio-political complexities present in Zimbabwe. Last year alone Island supported 14 552 Zimbabweans in need of our services including 2 561 children. Our staff and volunteers continued to support those in need despite the environment because they have had robust training and mentoring and embody our values of professionalism, compassion, integrity, teamwork and innovation. These attributes have for decades, enabled the organization to work with communities and the health system to provide critically needed palliative care services within some of the most difficult situations including the recent coup.
The team cannot do it alone and donations that are received from this Global Giving platform are used to provide services to patients and their families. Thank you for the continued support as we head into 2018 with a solid strategy and plans to support the national Ministry of Health and Child Care to integrate palliative care services into the health delivery system to ensure no one is left behind.
Island Hospice and Healthcare continue to work and provide the care that is needed for the most vulnerable in the country. We radically improve and change people’s lives and you can continue to help us do this. Now more than ever we need your support and just a small action or donation can make a radical difference.
