You are receiving this project report because you donated to MindLeaps’ project on GlobalGiving: ‘Digital Literacy.’
In the last report, we shared more about our partnership with International Computer Driving License (ICDL). We spoke with two MindLeaps students recently who discussed the impact of the curriculum on their education, Divine and Jean de Dieu.
Divine started the ICDL curriculum 6 months ago. She was selected to be in the ICDL program because she was a top English and dance student. She reported to us on what she has learned over the last few months:
"Before I came to MindLeaps, I knew just a little bit about a computer. We had learned the parts of a computer in primary school on a blackboard, like a mouse, keyboard, and screen.
I was very happy to come to MindLeaps and actually get to learn how to use a real computer. I can now edit and design word and excel documents. For example, I am now using an excel sheet in my work as a librarian at the MindLeaps library. I can keep track of all of the books that students are checking out. I like working there. I am learning to handle many different problems."
The next step after certification is having a formal internship. MindLeaps has partnered with the Business Development Fund in order to send students excelling in IT for a 3-month internship with the government. Jean de Dieu and Divine are the first MindLeaps students eligible for this internship, and we are in the process of fundraising for their living stipends so that they can accept these internships in January 2017.
The ICDL training will get more MindLeaps’ students ready for this great internship opportunity, which can lead to full time employment with the Rwandan government.
