Provide a Computer Center to Jambiani Center

2019 at Jambiani Center has been packed full of activities, new students, mid-terms, workshops and so much more! All of our students have been so committed to their studies and we could not be prouder of the progress they have made.

This past quarter, we had 33 students take their mid-terms and they all did exceptionally well. Additionally, during Ramadan, African Impact held conservation workshops and health workshops to extend the impact past normal programming. Conservation workshops allowed a variety of students to learn about overfishing, biodiversity, coral reefs, and protecting our oceans. Health workshop was definitely the biggest hit with a stronger attendance! We touched on the importance of health and also the food pyramid.

African Impact now plans to run more regular health workshops on Wednesday mornings. We had our introduction this week and will start workshops next week. The first workshop will be nutrition and we plan to have some mental health sessions too, as this topic is rarely talked about in the communities.

Now, as of July, we are getting an average of 100 students attending class per day. We are so excited to continue to watch them thrive.

It is still our big goal to build this computer center to allow for a grander impact on the students and their opportunities for employment. We are currently looking at the best way to design the center and are going to launch a fun campaign in the near future so we can hopefully have this center up and running in 2020.

As the year is coming to a close, we would like to take some time to reflect back on 2018 and also provide some exciting news for 2019. 

2018 was an amazing year, all thanks to incredible donors like yourself. After Zanzibar’s fantastic staff member, Sarah, and all our Global Giving donors, we were able to purchase a new water tank that hold 5000 liters of water. Before, the increasing demand for water in Zanzibar due to the booming tourism industry & growing hotel numbers is leaving many communities with no access to running water. Families have to walk long distances to gather water from wells, which is neither clean nor safe to drink.  Securing a water pump and water now allows up to 400 people in the community to be able to access this water as well.

Due to Jambiani’s existing center were are able to impact such a large group of students and provide further education and hopefully attain employment. Every year we get to see numerous students graduate from our programs. After they graduate, we check in to see how these classes benefitted their future. During these check-ins, we were still noticing a gap when trying to attain employment – an important skill that they were missing. Computer literacy. This leads us to our 2019 plans and goals. 

2019 is going to be another big fundraising year in order to extend our impact! We will be fundraising to build a computer center to host computer classes. This center will be an expansion of the already existing building with electricity and computers. We are so excited for this stage as we firmly believe this will increase our student’s opportunity for employment, especially when the tourism business is so heavy and relies on being computer literate.
