Japan Heart Cambodia
Progress Report of Cambodia Activities (June to September 2024)

  1. Crossmatch Lecture: A series of crossmatch procedure lectures was held at Japan Heart Children's Medical Center for medical staff to ensure preparedness during emergency blood transfusions when lab technicians are unavailable. These sessions, conducted over two weeks with eight lectures, were attended by 55 participants, including doctors and nurses. The lectures covered crossmatch procedures using slides, videos, and demonstrations, with opportunities for hands-on practice. A high level of engagement was observed, with nearly 80% of nurses participating.

  2. Pediatric Cancer Ward Update: 19-year-old girl, a dedicated older sister, has been accompanying her younger brother, Rafu, during his battle with rhabdomyosarcoma since February. She supports both him and other patients at the ward, helping with events and child care. She left school at 14 due to financial challenges and married at 16. She is now a single mother, balancing care for her son while supporting her family.

  3. Nutrition Management Department: The department participated in an event organized by Action4Diabetes for 15-25-year-olds with Type 1 diabetes in Phnom Penh. The nutrition team gave lectures on food groups, reading nutrition labels, and healthy eating habits, while addressing specific needs like balancing diet with insulin. The event highlighted the limited support system for diabetes patients in Cambodia, and the need for more comprehensive care.

  4. Perinatal Care: Monthly infant health check-ups were conducted for newborns at the Japan Heart Center, focusing on tracking growth and providing nutrition guidance for underweight infants and those starting solid foods. Additionally, the team supported pregnant women in rural areas by offering nutritional education during mobile health check-ups at eight local health centers, focusing on anemia prevention and healthy eating during pregnancy.
