Project Report 5
Bringing Hope to Children with Cancer in Cambodia (September- December 2025)
Overview
From September to December 2025, Japan Heart continued delivering life-saving pediatric cancer care in Cambodia during a period of major transition. Alongside ongoing treatment for children and family-centered support, this reporting period marked the beginning of full operations at the newly opened Japan Heart Asia Children’s Medical Center.
Throughout these months, children undergoing complex and long-term treatment were supported not only through medical interventions but also through emotional connection, peer support, and compassionate care. These efforts reflect Japan Heart’s commitment to ensuring that no child is denied hope simply because of where they are born.
Key Updates & Achievements
- Intensive Surgical Mission (September 8, 2025)
From August 19-22, pediatric surgeon and Japan Heart’s chief advisor, Dr. Hideto Yoshioka, carried out a focused surgical mission in Cambodia. During this short period, a total of 28 surgeries were successfully performed, including one pediatric cancer case, demonstrating Japan Heart’s ability to deliver high-impact surgical care efficiently.
Achievement:
Rachana, a 7-year-old girl whose tumor had responded well to chemotherapy, successfully underwent surgery and is continuing her recovery with renewed strength and hope.
- Bunchai’s Story: Strength Through Connection (October 6, 2025)
Fifteen-year-old Bunchai, diagnosed with osteosarcoma, has faced intense physical and emotional challenges throughout his treatment journey. Within the hospital, shared moments with fellow patients and caregivers became a vital source of encouragement, helping him find strength amid hardship.

Bunchai’s resilience illustrates how emotional connection and peer support within the hospital environment can empower children and families navigating long-term cancer care.
- Tiaris’s Journey: Compassion Amid Loss (December 10, 2025)
Sixteen-year-old Tiaris was diagnosed with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in his right leg, which ultimately required amputation. Despite the profound physical and emotional impact, he became a quiet source of comfort for younger patients, offering empathy and encouragement during difficult moments.
Achievement:
Inspired by his experience, Tiaris has begun to dream of becoming a nurse, highlighting how compassionate medical care can transform patients into future caregivers and leaders.
- New Pediatric Hospital Launching Full Operations (November 19–December)
Following the opening of the Japan Heart Asia Children’s Medical Center near Phnom Penh, patient transfers were successfully completed, and outpatient services and daily medical activities began. This marked a major milestone in expanding access to advanced pediatric care, including free cancer treatment.
Achievement:
During its first weeks of operation, the new hospital saw a steady increase in patient visits and strong engagement from local families, signaling growing trust and momentum within the community.
Upcoming Goals
