Fighting for Every Child: Advancing Pediatric Cancer Care in Cambodia (Jan–Apr 2026)
Overview
From January to April 2026, Japan Heart continued its efforts to provide life-saving treatment for children with cancer in Cambodia, while working toward a long-term goal: closing the survival gap between low-resource settings and high-income countries.
In Cambodia, many children still face delayed diagnosis, limited access to treatment, and financial barriers. As a result, survival rates remain significantly lower than in developed countries.
During this period, Japan Heart focused not only on delivering medical treatment but also on supporting children and their families through the emotional and social challenges that accompany long-term care. Each patient’s journey reflects both the realities of pediatric cancer and the impact that timely, compassionate care can have.
These efforts represent steady progress toward a future where every child has access to the treatment they need regardless of where they are born.
Key Updates & Achievements
- Patient Story: Holding Onto Hope Amid Uncertainty – Pachou’s Journey (January 26, 2026)
Pachou, a 3-years old boy undergoing cancer treatment, faced not only the physical toll of illness but also the emotional weight of uncertainty.
Far from home, his days were filled with repeated procedures, unfamiliar routines, and moments of fear. At times, the long hours in the hospital felt overwhelming.
Yet, small moments of conversations with nurses, smiles from staff, and the presence of family became his source of strength. These moments helped him continue forward, one day at a time.
Achievement:
Continuous and compassionate care supported Pachou not only medically but also emotionally, helping him remain engaged in treatment.
- Patient Story: “I Want to Go Back to School” – Reaksa’s Determination (February 16, 2026)
Reaksa, a 16-year-old girl undergoing cancer treatment, saw her life change suddenly as illness forced her away from school and daily routines.
Even during treatment, she shared a clear wish: “I want to go back to school.” That dream became a source of motivation as she faced each day.
Supported by medical staff and those around her, she continues treatment while holding onto her vision of returning to the classroom.
Achievement:
Reaksa’s story highlights how access to treatment helps preserve not only life, but also hope, identity, and future aspirations.
- Patient Story: Finding Strength Through Connection – Monyreach’s Journey (March 9, 2026)
Monyreach, a 2-year-old boy undergoing cancer treatment, faced daily procedures he could not fully understand.
In moments of fear and discomfort, he relied on the presence of others family members and medical staff for reassurance. Gentle voices, familiar faces, and simple interactions brought him comfort.
Through these connections, he found the strength to continue his treatment journey.
Achievement:
A supportive and compassionate environment played a critical role in both emotional and medical care, especially for very young patients.
- Behind Every Child – Supporting Patients Like Songlong (April 13, 2026)
Behind each child’s journey, including patients like Songlong, is a dedicated team of medical professionals providing continuous care.
Nurses and staff carefully monitor conditions, manage treatment, and support families facing uncertainty. Their role extends beyond clinical care, offering reassurance and stability in difficult moments.
Achievement:
The commitment of medical staff ensures that children receive consistent, high-quality care alongside essential emotional support.
Upcoming Goals
Japan Heart will continue to expand access to pediatric cancer treatment in Cambodia while strengthening systems that support early diagnosis, continuous care, and long-term recovery.
In addition to medical treatment, efforts will focus on improving the overall well-being of patients, including emotional support and opportunities for children to maintain hope for their future.
By building local capacity and enhancing care delivery, Japan Heart is working toward a future where all children can receive the treatment they need within their own country.
