Completing Deliveries of School Supplies to Hurricane Affected Schools in Saint Jean du Sud

When the devastating Category 5 hurricane struck the south region of Haiti in October 2016, Peace Winds arrived immediately to assess this hardest hit area, finding the specific town called “District Four” in Torbeck was receiving no assistance.  Yet one-third of the population lost their homes.  Peace Winds provided immediate support of shelters, relief goods (food, hygiene kits, blankets) as well as materials for rebuilding homes.

In May 2017, Peace Winds provided textbooks for more than 700 students and school equipment for four schools in Saint Jean du Sud.  Yet a total of seven schools and 2,000 students needed textbooks at that time. The teachers needed blackboards and teaching materials.  With your generous support through GlobalGiving, Peace Winds completed deliveries of needed school supplies to all seven schools by the summer 2017.

Here is a statement made by one student beneficiary who had received textbooks and other school materials: “My name is Edison.  I am in secondary one at Lycee de Debouchette.  My father’s house was destroyed, all my school materials were lost.  After the cyclone, I did not know what to do because my father had nothing. Thanks to the organization Peace Winds, I can say that I can find a lot of important school materials so that I can complete the school year.”

With your thoughtful donations, Peace Winds has helped those underserved young students in Haiti. Peace Winds now is supporting capacity building to strengthen community resilience in Saint Jean du Sud. We sincerely hope you continue to partner in our further efforts in Haiti.

As always you have our sincerest gratitude.
