Peace Winds is providing disaster resistant construction training to help stop the cyclical trap of repair and destruction. Peace Winds is training local carpenters, masons, and other community members. Together they are outlining best practices and reviewing important housing construction techniques to ensure structures withstand future disasters. The engineering teams will be building community centers together with the program’s trainees. These centers will host livelihood trainings, after-school programs, and events for the community.
In addition, Peace Winds and community members will be building latrines and providing sanitation and hygiene education. About 80 percent of these rural residents do not have a latrine. Maintaining adequate hygiene following disasters becomes critical to reducing the spread of disease.
The Saint Jean du Sud Mayor’s response was welcoming, “Thank you Peace Winds! We are ready to work with you!”
We appreciate your continued support for the Saint Jean du Sud community.
