Peace Winds and the trained local masons and carpenters have spent one year working in Saint Jean du Sud. Together we were able to construct six community centers! The communities are using the cetners for community meetings livelihood training (e.g., artisan work), weddings and special events, and after school activites for children. One center is equipped with a television where pay pay a small entry fee to watch soccer games and movies. (The collected fees help maintain the center.) Another purpose of the centers is to serve as a safe haven during disasters.
Peace Winds is beginning the second year in Arniquet, a community located near Saint Jean du Sud. The trained masons and carpenters are training new masons in this area with plans to build four community centers in the Arniquet community.
At Saint Jean du Sud community centers, Peace Winds and training residents conduct WASH programs for the school children, and also Disaster Risk Reduction Workshops for the all residents of the communities. As the additional four community centers are constructed in Arniquet, Peace Winds will initiate these training programs and workships in Arniquet.
