Project Status Report: Upcycle Juba City Trash – From Waste to Wow
Reporting Period: January 2026
Organization: South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID)
Project Location: Juba, South Sudan
1. Executive Summary
As we open the new year, Juba remains at a critical juncture regarding its environmental health. The "From Waste to Wow" initiative, led by SSGID, continues to serve as a beacon of innovation in the face of the city's overwhelming waste management crisis. This report highlights the progress made during January 2026 and outlines the bridge between our successful 2025 pilot and the urgent need for sustained funding to maintain our momentum.
2. 2025 Campaign Success: Building the Foundation
The progress we are witnessing today was made possible by the 2025 SSGID "Waste to Wealth" Campaign. During that period, the project received its initial seed funding through a dedicated push for local well-wishers and small-scale community donors.
What the 2025 Funding Enabled:
3. January 2026: Community Impact and Activity
Building on the foundation laid last year, January has been a month of remarkable community mobilization. We have transitioned from individual training to Community-Led Upcycling Clusters.
4. A Story of Resilience: Transformation of Local Communities
In January, we witnessed a profound shift in the Kator and Munuki communities. Previously, these neighborhoods struggled with mounting heaps of refuse that served as breeding grounds for disease.
"We no longer see the trash as a curse on our streets," shared a community representative during a January workshop. "Because of the skills learned through this project, our youth are coming together every Saturday to collect 'raw materials' instead of 'rubbish.' We are cleaning our own air and water while creating products we can actually use in our homes. The 'Wow' isn't just in the products; it's in our renewed pride for Juba."
5. The Urgent Reality: A Call for Partnership
While the 2025 funding provided the spark, those initial resources have now been fully exhausted. The scale of the waste management challenge in Juba is one of the city's most significant hurdles, affecting health, dignity, and economic growth.
SSGID is making a formal appeal to well-wishers, individual donors, and international partners for 2026 support. Without fresh investment, we risk losing the incredible community momentum built over the last year.
Immediate Funding Priorities:
6. Conclusion
The 2025 campaign proved that Juba can be transformed. January 2026 has shown that the community is ready to do the work. We have the proof, the passion, and the people now we need the partnership. By supporting "From Waste to Wow," you are investing in a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous South Sudan.
Will you stand with SSGID to keep Juba shining in 2026?
With deep gratitude,
The SSGID Team
