As we open the new year, Juba remains at a critical juncture regarding its environmental health. The "From Waste to Wow" initiative, led by SSGID, continues to serve as a beacon of innovation in the face of the city's overwhelming waste management crisis. This report highlights the progress made during January 2026 and outlines the bridge between our successful 2025 pilot and the urgent need for sustained funding to maintain our momentum.

2. 2025 Campaign Success: Building the Foundation

The progress we are witnessing today was made possible by the 2025 SSGID "Waste to Wealth" Campaign. During that period, the project received its initial seed funding through a dedicated push for local well-wishers and small-scale community donors.

What the 2025 Funding Enabled:

• Infrastructure: We established a central sorting and upcycling hub in Juba.
• Proof of Concept: We successfully demonstrated that plastic waste and discarded tires could be transformed into high-quality furniture and construction materials.
• Initial Engagement: The 2025 funding allowed us to move from theory to action, proving that the residents of Juba are eager to participate in circular economy solutions.

3. January 2026: Community Impact and Activity

Building on the foundation laid last year, January has been a month of remarkable community mobilization. We have transitioned from individual training to Community-Led Upcycling Clusters.

• Waste Diversion: Local neighborhood clusters successfully diverted over 2.5 tonnes of plastic from drainage systems this month, significantly reducing flood risks in pilot areas.
• Collective Craftsmanship: Communities across three districts have begun organized production of "Eco-Ottomans" and durable floor mats made from reclaimed materials.
• Education for All: We held community-wide "Trash-Talk" sessions, teaching families how to segregate waste at the source to ensure materials remain clean enough for upcycling.

4. A Story of Resilience: Transformation of Local Communities

In January, we witnessed a profound shift in the Kator and Munuki communities. Previously, these neighborhoods struggled with mounting heaps of refuse that served as breeding grounds for disease.

Immediate Funding Priorities:

1. Industrial Scaling: Transitioning from hand-tools to shredders and extruders to process larger waste volumes.
2. Logistical Support: Acquiring reliable transport to collect waste from across Juba’s expanding borders.
3. Widespread Training: Expanding our reaches to empower 1,000+ vulnerable residents through upcycling micro-enterprises.
