Project Update: Upcycle Juba City Trash from Waste to Wow
Project Title: Upcycle Juba City Trash from Waste to Wow
Organization: South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID)
Walking through the vibrant markets and neighborhood streets of Juba, it is impossible to miss the challenges posed by unmanaged plastic waste. But where many see accumulated trash, the team at South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID) sees an opportunity for transformation, dignity, and local innovation.
During a recent community dialogue in Juba, young local youth and women shared their aspirations for cleaner, safer surroundings and economic opportunities. One young participant expressed a vision that truly captures the heart of this initiative: "If we can learn to turn what people throw away into useful products, we aren't just cleaning our streets we are building our own futures."
This belief drives our project, "Upcycle Juba City Trash from Waste to Wow." Our goal is to transform environmental challenges into creative, sustainable solutions by equipping youth and women with the skills to collect, recycle, and upcycle plastic waste into marketable items, eco-friendly crafts, and everyday community resources.
While we have not yet raised sufficient funding on GlobalGiving to launch full-scale field implementation and training activities during this reporting cycle, our commitment to this vision remains unwavering.
Behind the scenes, SSGID continues to build strong foundational relationships with local youth groups, women’s associations, and community leaders across Juba. We are actively refining our training curriculum, organizing preliminary awareness sessions, and mobilizing local enthusiasm so that we are ready to hit the ground running as funding grows.
Every initiative begins with a bold idea and dedicated community members ready for action. We extend our sincere gratitude to every donor and supporter who has believed in this vision so far. SSGID remains fully committed to bringing this upcycling movement to life in Juba, creating a cleaner city and brighter economic opportunities for our youth.
