Mentoring has become a central part of student life at Wavecrest College for Hospitality in Lagos, Nigeria. Every Wavecrest student now has a one-to-one mentor, with 44 local mentors from inside and outside the college.
Mentors are trained to use EMPath, an approach based on behavioural science and structured goal-setting. It helps students set clear goals and work towards them, with the support of their mentors. Veronica, Project Lead at Wavecrest, calls it "a game changer."
Nifemi is studying for a Certificate in Hospitality Operations. Her goals were "to learn how to listen constructively and pass my exams through guidance and support." Here's how she describes the past year:
"I have learnt how to be more attentive, patient and I have learned to read more. And it was through active listening and advice from my mentor. I have no problem with my mentor, she is the best Wavecrest has given me."
She says her mentor is supportive and "treats me like her own daughter and makes me feel comfortable." When we asked about her biggest achievement, she said: "Confidence, personal and professional growth."
Nifemi was able to achieve her goals and grow into a confident young women thanks to the support of her mentor, Wavecrest and your generosity. Thank you for your support!
