During the first three months of this year, the area was free from haze. YUM took this opportunity to take a number of steps to assist people’s economy that had been affected by the haze:
Crop yields had failed during the dry season and pest populations had greatly increased causing a serious setback for the production of seed stocks and vegetables. The delayed rainy season had forced farmers to postpone plantation, thus draining their wealth. YUM is in the villages to assist communities to deal with theses various problems, distributing seeds and helping farmers to restore their productions.
Earlier this year, a Training of Trainers was organized by two expert consultants to teach our staff how to “Communicate for Change”: the training aimed to create communication strategies using behavior change communication.
Why this training? One of the key problems in the area is that small farmers use a jerry can of gasoline and a match to clear their fields, thus causing a lot of smoke. They are unaware of how yearly exposure to fire smoke is affecting their health. That’s what we need to change.
The trainers had to develop key messages for specific target groups, learn about the best communication channels and come up with ideas about how to motivate different groups.
Another activity being currently conducted is an extensive survey to assess the causes of fire and to evaluate which conditions will assist our trainers to promote and achieve a mind set change by local populations. The survey includes a set of questions regarding health that will assist in the improvement of our current educational materials and to plan for further doctors’ assistance. The flyers YUM distributes to local populations to assist them to deal with recurring health problems due to the haze are attached.
