Career Focus Program for Black students - Fall 2022

By Dimeji Tomori | CEO

Hello patners,

Hope you are doing well. Happy new year to you and family. I want to quickly share update about our ongoing career focus program for African American students. Career Focused Program is a PCI Workforce development session designed basically for black and minority students within the Fox Valley Area to prepare for future career and opportunities. The program will provide students with relevant skills and training needed to capture the future opportunities that await them.

African American workers still face more hurdles to get a job, never mind a good one, than. They continue to face systematically higher unemployment rates, fewer job opportunities, lower pay, poorer benefits, and greater job instability. These persistent differences reflect systematic barriers to quality jobs, such as outright discrimination against African American workers,1 as well as occupational segregation—whereby African American workers often end up in lower-paid jobs than other groups. This is the main reason why we need to work with our black students to plan early for the future opportunities.

We have discovered a gap in career resource use in our schools. In the Appleton Area School District and other school districts, there are strong curricula dedicated to career program and workforce development. However, Black students rarely utilize these. Pointters Community Initiatives strives to fill this gap by creating a career focused program that is unique, productive and welcoming to our Black students.

How do we measure our progress ?

  • Survey report from the program
  • Number of students signing up for the yearly program
  • Percentage of black and minority students graduating from high schools
  • Number of black and minority students going for career they like

Benefits of the Career Focused Program- CFG

Thanks
