Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear DonorsThe situation in the villages remains challenging as families continue to face a high risk of malaria, especially during this period of heavy rains. Standing water around homes and pathways is creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes to breed, making prevention increasingly important for children, pregnant women, older people, and other vulnerable community members.

Karitas Relief Mission continues to engage families in Namakwa and surrounding communities about practical ways to reduce exposure to mosquitoes. Community members are being encouraged to sleep under mosquito nets, keep their surroundings clean, remove stagnant water where possible, and seek medical attention quickly when symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, weakness, or body pain appear.

The community is also continuing to use mosquito repellents and other available prevention measures. Families are sharing information with one another so that malaria prevention becomes a shared responsibility rather than an individual effort.

One of the important lessons from the project is that malaria prevention requires consistent action. Families cannot rely only on treatment after someone becomes sick; reducing mosquito exposure and identifying illness early are equally important.

Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to working alongside village families, schools, and community members to promote malaria prevention and protect children and vulnerable households. We continue to monitor the situation on the ground and encourage families to take preventive measures every day.

Next Steps

We will continue community awareness activities, encourage households to maintain cleaner surroundings, promote proper mosquito-net use, and support families in understanding the importance of early treatment when malaria symptoms appear. We also hope to reach more vulnerable households with malaria-prevention materials as the project continues.
