Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

Karitas Relief Mission continues to work with vulnerable village families to prevent malaria and reduce the suffering and loss of life caused by this preventable disease. Our community activities focus on malaria awareness, prevention, early recognition of symptoms, and encouraging families to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Malaria remains a serious concern in the communities we serve, particularly among young children, pregnant women, and families who have limited access to healthcare and preventive materials.

2. Community Progress

During this reporting period, Karitas Relief Mission continued engaging families and community members through awareness and prevention activities. Families were reminded about the importance of sleeping under treated mosquito nets, keeping their surroundings free from stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed, and seeking medical care immediately when malaria symptoms appear.

Community members also shared their experiences and concerns about malaria. These discussions helped us understand that many families continue to face challenges accessing adequate malaria prevention materials and timely treatment.

3. A Recent Loss That Has Deeply Affected the Community

The seriousness of the malaria situation was brought home to us again this week when we lost a two-month-old baby to malaria.

This tragic loss has continued to shock and deeply concern the Karitas Relief Mission team and the community because protecting children from preventable diseases is at the heart of our malaria program. The death has strengthened our determination to continue educating families and expanding malaria prevention activities in the villages.

The loss also reminds us that very young children are particularly vulnerable and that families need access to information, mosquito nets, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.

4. Key Activities

During the reporting period, our work focused on:

- Conducting malaria prevention education with village families.

- Encouraging families to consistently use mosquito nets.

- Raising awareness about early malaria symptoms and the importance of seeking treatment quickly.

- Encouraging communities to reduce mosquito breeding areas around homes.

- Listening to families about the challenges they face in preventing and treating malaria.

- Following up on vulnerable families and children affected by malaria.

- Mobilizing community support for continued malaria prevention activities.

5. Progress and Results

The project is helping families become more aware of the actions they can take to protect themselves from malaria. Community discussions have increased understanding of the importance of prevention and early treatment.

However, the recent death of the two-month-old baby demonstrates that significant challenges remain. We cannot consider the work complete while children and vulnerable families continue to lose their lives to malaria.

6. Challenges

Our major challenges include:

- Limited access to adequate mosquito nets for vulnerable families.

- Poverty, which makes it difficult for some families to seek treatment quickly.

- Continued exposure to mosquitoes in rural communities.

- Limited resources for sustained community malaria prevention activities.

- The vulnerability of infants and young children to severe malaria.

- The need for continued community education and follow-up.

7. Lessons Learned

The recent loss of the baby has reinforced an important lesson for our organization: malaria prevention must remain a continuous community effort.

Providing information alone is not enough. Families also need practical prevention materials, access to healthcare, and support to act quickly when symptoms appear.

8. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue:

1. Expanding malaria awareness among village families.

2. Mobilizing mosquito nets for households that lack adequate protection.

3. Increasing education on malaria prevention and early treatment.

4. Supporting communities to identify and reduce mosquito breeding areas.

5. Giving particular attention to households with infants and other vulnerable family members.

6. Continuing to document malaria-related challenges and community needs.

7. Mobilizing additional support so that more families can be protected.

9. Conclusion

Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to keeping village families safe from malaria. Although progress is being made through community education and prevention activities, the recent death of a two-month-old baby reminds us of the urgent need to do more.

Every family protected and every child who receives timely care represents an important step toward reducing preventable malaria deaths in our communities.

We are grateful to all supporters who stand with Karitas Relief Mission in this work. With continued support, we can reach more families, provide more preventive materials, strengthen community awareness, and help protect vulnerable children from malaria. If you want, I can also make this more emotional and powerful for GlobalGiving donors, while keeping it factual and professional.
