Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

Dear Donors

Karitas Relief Mission continues to implement its community malaria prevention initiative, Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria, with the goal of protecting vulnerable families, particularly children, pregnant women, and other people at greater risk of severe malaria.

Yesterday, we held a follow-up meeting to review the situation in the communities we are supporting and to assess the continuing need for mosquito nets.

2. Increasing Need for Mosquito Nets

During yesterday’s meeting, it became clear that the number of families and individuals needing protection continues to increase. As we engage more communities and gather updated information from the villages, more families are being identified as needing mosquito nets.

This increasing demand has made it necessary for Karitas Relief Mission to review the amount that was originally budgeted for the project. The initial budget was based on an earlier estimate of the number of families requiring mosquito nets, but the latest information shows that the need is considerably greater.

3. Malaria Continues to Threaten Families

Malaria remains a serious concern in the communities where we work. Families living in vulnerable conditions often struggle to obtain mosquito nets, leaving children and other household members exposed to mosquito bites during the night.

The situation has been particularly painful for our organization because we recently lost a two-month-old baby to malaria. This loss continues to shock and deeply concern Karitas Relief Mission and has strengthened our determination to expand our malaria prevention efforts.

4. Project Response

The project is focusing on providing mosquito nets to families who cannot afford them. By increasing access to mosquito nets, we hope to reduce exposure to malaria-carrying mosquitoes and help families take a practical step toward protecting themselves.

The increased number of people identified as needing mosquito nets means that additional resources will be required to reach the communities adequately.

5. Challenges

The main challenge remains the shortage of financial resources needed to purchase enough mosquito nets for all the families identified.

The growing number of beneficiaries has also required us to revise the original project budget. Although this increases the amount of funding needed, it reflects the actual situation on the ground and the growing demand for malaria prevention support.

6. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission will continue to:

- Identify families that urgently need mosquito nets.

- Update the number of people requiring malaria prevention support.

- Mobilize additional resources to purchase more mosquito nets.

- Distribute mosquito nets to vulnerable families.

- Continue educating communities about malaria prevention.

- Monitor the impact of the intervention and document progress.

- Keep our supporters informed about the changing needs in the communities.

7. Conclusion

Yesterday’s meeting showed us that the need for malaria prevention support is continuing to grow. The increase in the number of families requesting mosquito nets has made it necessary to revise our original budget so that the project can respond to the actual situation on the ground.

The recent loss of a two-month-old baby to malaria has reminded us of the urgency of this work. Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to protecting village families and reducing preventable malaria-related suffering.

We appeal to partners, donors, and well-wishers to support this effort so that more vulnerable families can receive mosquito nets and protect their loved ones from malaria.
