Dear Donors
Karitas Relief Mission continues to implement the “Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria” project to protect vulnerable families from malaria, particularly children, pregnant women, and elderly people living in communities where access to mosquito nets and other preventive measures remains limited.
Malaria continues to be a serious threat to families in our communities. Recent discussions with community members have shown that the number of households requesting mosquito nets is increasing as more families recognize the importance of sleeping under treated mosquito nets.
Activities Conducted
During our recent community engagement, Karitas Relief Mission met with community representatives and families to assess the current malaria situation and identify households that still lack adequate protection.
The meeting focused on:
- Identifying families that do not have enough mosquito nets.
- Listening to community members about the challenges they face in preventing malaria.
- Encouraging families to consistently sleep under mosquito nets.
- Raising awareness about early recognition of malaria symptoms and the importance of seeking treatment promptly.
- Reviewing the number of mosquito nets currently required by the community.
Increasing Need for Mosquito Nets
One of the major findings from the recent discussions is that the number of people in need of mosquito nets continues to increase. Some households have several children but do not have enough nets for everyone to sleep under proper protection.
Because of this increased demand, Karitas Relief Mission has had to review and increase the amount originally budgeted for the project so that more vulnerable families can be reached.
This increase in need demonstrates that malaria prevention remains an urgent priority in the communities we serve.
Community Response
Community members expressed appreciation for the efforts being made to protect families from malaria. Many families are willing to participate in malaria-prevention activities but have limited financial resources to purchase mosquito nets themselves.
Parents particularly expressed concern about protecting their children, as children remain among those most vulnerable to severe malaria.
Challenges
The main challenges identified include:
1. Insufficient mosquito nets among vulnerable households.
2. Increasing numbers of families requesting assistance.
3. Limited household income to purchase mosquito nets independently.
4. Continued exposure to mosquitoes in communities where environmental conditions favor mosquito breeding.
5. Limited resources available to meet the growing demand.
Next Steps
Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue mobilizing resources to purchase and distribute mosquito nets to the most vulnerable families. We will also continue community education on malaria prevention, proper use of mosquito nets, environmental cleanliness, and early treatment.
Our goal is to ensure that as many families as possible have adequate protection, especially households with young children and other vulnerable members.
Conclusion
The recent community engagement has confirmed that malaria remains a major concern and that the need for mosquito nets is greater than initially anticipated. Karitas Relief Mission is therefore committed to expanding the reach of this project and mobilizing additional support to protect more village families.
Every mosquito net provided can help protect a family from malaria and contribute to healthier and safer communities.
