Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

Karitas Relief Mission continues its efforts to protect vulnerable village families from malaria through community sensitization, identification of households in need of mosquito nets, and mobilization of resources for malaria prevention.

Malaria remains a serious health threat, particularly to young children, pregnant women, older people, and families who cannot afford adequate preventive measures. Our mission is to help communities reduce the risk of malaria and ensure that vulnerable households have better access to essential prevention resources.

 2. Recent Activities and Community Engagement

During our recent community meetings and consultations, we discussed the growing need for mosquito nets among village families. We discovered that the number of households requesting support was increasing beyond what we had initially anticipated.

This growing demand has required us to review our original budget and adjust the amount needed to respond to the community's needs. Our discussions have focused on identifying vulnerable families, understanding the challenges they face, and planning how available resources can be used effectively.

We have also continued emphasizing the importance of sleeping under mosquito nets every night, maintaining clean surroundings, and seeking medical attention promptly whenever malaria symptoms appear.

 3. Key Findings and Progress

Our recent engagement has highlighted several important issues:

-Increasing demand for mosquito nets: More families are requesting nets than initially expected, showing the importance of expanding our planned response.

- Financial challenges: Many vulnerable households cannot afford mosquito nets and depend on external support to protect their children and other family members.

- The vulnerability of young children: We were deeply saddened by the loss of a two-month-old baby to malaria. This tragic incident reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen malaria prevention and ensure that families seek prompt medical care for sick children.

- Continued community awareness: Families need ongoing education about malaria prevention, the correct use of mosquito nets, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

These findings have strengthened our commitment to continue mobilizing resources and preparing an appropriate response to the growing needs of the community.

 4. Challenges Encountered

Despite our commitment, Karitas Relief Mission continues to face several challenges:

1. Insufficient financial resources to meet the increasing demand for mosquito nets.

2. A growing number of vulnerable households requiring assistance.

3. The difficulty faced by low-income families in purchasing preventive materials.

4. The continued risk of malaria among children and other vulnerable community members.

The increasing demand has made it necessary to revise our initial budget so that our plans better reflect the needs identified during community engagement.

5. Expected Outcomes

With sufficient funding and support from our partners and well-wishers, we expect this project to:

-Provide mosquito nets to vulnerable families who cannot afford them.

- Improve protection for children, pregnant women, and other at-risk community members.

- Increase awareness of malaria prevention and the importance of consistent mosquito-net use.

- Encourage families to seek prompt medical care when malaria symptoms develop.

- Contribute to reducing preventable malaria infections and deaths in the communities we serve.

 6. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue identifying households most in need, reviewing the revised budget, and mobilizing additional resources to meet the growing demand for mosquito nets.

We will also continue community sensitization on malaria prevention, encourage early treatment, and work with community leaders and health workers to strengthen local prevention efforts.

The actual number of mosquito nets to be provided will depend on the funds raised and the final assessment of community needs. At this stage, the project is focused on preparation, resource mobilization, and planning; we do not wish to report distributions or outcomes that have not yet been achieved.

7. Conclusion and Appeal for Support

The increasing demand for mosquito nets demonstrates how important this project is to village families. The heartbreaking loss of a two-month-old baby to malaria has further strengthened our determination to help protect vulnerable children and households.

Karitas Relief Mission appeals to generous donors, partners, and friends to support this initiative. Every contribution can help us reach more families with essential malaria-prevention resources and health education.

Together, we can help build safer communities where families are better protected from malaria and where every child has a greater opportunity to grow up healthy.
