Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

1. Introduction

Karitas Relief Mission continues its efforts to protect vulnerable village families from malaria through the distribution of mosquito nets, community awareness, and malaria prevention activities.

Malaria remains a serious health challenge, particularly for young children, pregnant women, and elderly people. Many families cannot afford adequate protection, leaving them exposed to mosquito bites and life-threatening infections.

2. Progress Made

We have continued engaging with community members, local leaders, and health workers to understand the malaria situation and identify households most in need of assistance.

During our community meetings, we observed an increasing demand for mosquito nets as more families expressed concern about the rising number of malaria cases.

We have also continued raising awareness about the importance of sleeping under treated mosquito nets, maintaining clean surroundings, eliminating stagnant water, and seeking early medical attention whenever symptoms appear.

3. Community Challenges

Despite these efforts, many households still lack sufficient mosquito nets. Large families often share a limited number of nets, leaving children and other vulnerable members unprotected.

We were particularly saddened by the loss of a two-month-old baby following malaria complications. This tragic incident reminded us of the urgent need to strengthen malaria prevention and protect vulnerable children.

4. Project Implementation Plan

Karitas Relief Mission intends to:

- Identify vulnerable households requiring mosquito nets.

- Procure and distribute treated mosquito nets.

- Prioritize pregnant women, children under five, and elderly people.

- Conduct community education on malaria prevention.

- Work with local health workers to encourage early testing and treatment.

- Monitor households to assess how the mosquito nets are being used.

5. Current Funding Challenges

The growing demand for mosquito nets has created additional financial pressure on the project. Following consultations with community members and local leaders, it became clear that more households require assistance than initially anticipated.

We therefore need additional resources to increase the number of mosquito nets and reach more vulnerable families.

6. Expected Impact

Through this initiative, we hope to reduce malaria infections, protect young children and pregnant women, improve household safety, and reduce preventable deaths in rural communities.

The project will also strengthen community awareness and encourage families to take responsibility for preventing malaria.

7. Conclusion and Appeal

Our commitment to keeping village families safe from malaria remains strong. However, the increasing demand for mosquito nets and the tragic loss of a young baby demonstrate how urgent this intervention has become.

Karitas Relief Mission appeals to donors, partners, and well-wishers to support this initiative. Your contribution will help us provide mosquito nets and life-saving malaria prevention education to families who cannot afford adequate protection.

Together, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and help protect vulnerable children and families.
