By Martin Fenton | Treasurer, Karen Fenton Ovarian Cancer Fund
Our fundraising efforts culminated with the recent purchase the “Ion Torrent Genexus Integrated Sequener” machine, a new innovative machine currently unavailable to cancer patients in Cork. The machine is located in CUH, where Karen spent her final two months, under the expert guidance of Medical Oncologist Dr. Dearbhaile Collins and Clinical Director for Cancer Services, Dr. Richard Bambury. Dr. Collins specialises in gynaecological malignancies, including Ovarian Cancer. This state of the art technology will analyse cancer mutations and find new “precise” treatments for patients. Unfortunatley the machine is not yet in service due to the challenging Covid circumstances at CUH. We expect that this will change in the coming months.
Project work has been limited somewhat and we have been unable to meet for a photoshoot with CUHC following a significant donation to purchase the machine for CUH. We expect to meet with them when full lockdown restrictions ease in Ireland in the coming month or two. We will then publicize the machine purchase on our website and on social media. In the meantime we will continue to raise funds which we will hold and put towards research and/or supporting ongoing costs for the machine.
We raised over €80,000 to donate to CUH for this critical technology. The machine is purchased in Karen's name and oince commissioned will leave a lasting legacy to cancer patients in the Cork and wider Munster region.
Thanks to everyone for your support. All of your donations are going direct to this machine or supporting costs. We expect that in our next update we will be providing further good news on commissioning this machine.
