Kick Start CUH Cancer Diagnosis Machine

Our fundraising efforts culminated with the purchase the “Ion Torrent Genexus Integrated Sequener” machine, a new innovative machine currently unavailable to cancer patients in Cork. The machine is located in CUH, where Karen spent her final two months, under the expert guidance of Medical Oncologist Dr. Dearbhaile Collins and Clinical Director for Cancer Services, Dr. Richard Bambury. Dr. Collins specialises in gynaecological malignancies, including Ovarian Cancer. This state of the art technology will analyse cancer mutations and find new “precise” treatments for patients.

Unfortunately due to continued Covid difficultes in the health service in Ireland the machine is not yet in service. We expect that this will change in the coming weeks. We raised over €80,000 to donate to CUH for this critical technology. The machine is purchased in Karen's name and oince commissioned will leave a lasting legacy to cancer patients in the Cork and wider Munster region. Unfortunately we have been unable to meet for a photoshoot with CUHC following our significant donation to purchase the machine for CUH. We expect to meet with them in the coming weeks. We will then publicize the machine purchase on our website and on social media.

Project work has been limited somewhat lately. But we hosted a very successful Karen Fenton Virtual 5k Run (as an alternative to the normal 5K memorial run). This event was hugely successful and we had 600 registrations and 300 who logged their time after the event. We will continue to raise funds which we will hold and put towards research and/or supporting ongoing costs for the machine.
