When an orphanage suddenly closes

Learning they were going to live with kin

When the Love One Another Orphanage in Bo, Sierra Leone, announced on March 11 that it would have to close in one month, the fate of 170 children was suddenly up in the air. Its main supporter in Russia could no longer support them due to sanctions.

Kidsave’s Sierra Leone Program Manager Ibrahim learned that arrangements were being made for the younger children, but that 62 children were older, harder to place, and would turn eighteen in the next three or four years. They had no prospects or help finding a new home. Kidsave specializes in helping older, harder-to-place children find permanent loving families. Ibrahim agreed to find families for these children – and to do so in the outrageously short timeframe of two weeks!

Kidsave flew into gear and Ibrahim and his small team searched for any kin that might exist for the 28 children who originally came from the Bo and Pujehun Districts. Information from the children led Ibrahim to believe these children did have kin there, and that turned out to be true. All twenty-eight children were reunified with kin.

When Kidsave offered training on the proper care of children, which also serves as a guidance and empowerment tool for families in the running of their homes, 268 people joined this informative session, so many more people than just the families benefited.

Thirty-four others were from Kailahun and Kenema Districts, where Ebola killed so many in 2014. Ibrahim and his small team travelled with the village father of the orphanage to meet with Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs, Mayor of Kenema District and City, and local chiefs to plan a “hosting” event the next week. The plan was to take the 34 kids to these two cities, hold events to introduce each of the children at a public gathering featuring local artists and musicians.

This successful model has been used before, and this time it led to 16 families agreeing to take in 23 children. The kids will have a 3-5-day stay with their new families to bond and be sure all is well before they permanently join those families. Kidsave gives kids a voice and a choice. If any of these new relationships do not work out, Kidsave will work to find new, agreeable families for those children. Kidsave will continue to pursue finding permanent loving families for the remaining 11.
