Private academies, known as hagwons, are a common part of Korean society that help students supplement school learning and prepare for university entrance exams. However, these opportunities are often out of reach for youth living in children's homes. KKOOM's Hagwon Scholarship bridges this gap by funding after-school tutoring and academic programs, giving students the confidence, support, and skills they need to keep up with their peers and dream big.
Private academies, known as hagwons, are essential to success in Korea's education system. They help students build skills, confidence, and prepare for college entrance exams. However, children in the social welfare system often cannot afford these classes. Families spend an average of 2,000,000 KRW (about $1,500 USD) per month on hagwons, leaving youth in children's homes without equal access to education or opportunity.
KKOOM's Hagwon Scholarship Project funds monthly tuition for children in Korea's social welfare system to attend local hagwons. Each scholarship provides 150,000-400,000 KRW ($100-$300 USD) for academic or extracurricular learning. Working with KKOOM-supported children's homes in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, we cover hagwon tuition and track enrollment to ensure consistent access and measurable impact.
Access to hagwon education helps students in children's homes succeed in school, pursue higher education, and gain independence. This project gives them the tools and confidence to compete equally with their peers, breaking cycles of poverty and exclusion. Over time, KKOOM's support builds pathways for long-term success, empowerment, and inclusion across Korea's social welfare system.
