Learn to Swim & Survive: Water Safety for Women

Summary

Drowning is a silent epidemic, and women in vulnerable communities are disproportionately at risk. Limited access to pools, cultural barriers, and a lack of female instructors prevent millions from learning this lifesaving skill. On World Drowning Prevention Day 25 July, we'll break these barriers. This project provides free, women-only swim survival classes in safe, supportive environments. We will train 300 women & adolescent girls in essential water competency, rescue techniques, and first aid.

Challenge

In many regions, women and girls face a deadly combination of risk and restriction. They're often responsible for collecting water, washing clothes, and caring for children near unsafe water sources-rivers, wells, and ponds-yet are systematically denied the opportunity to learn to swim due to cultural norms, a lack of female-only facilities & cost. This creates a pervasive cycle of fear, dependency, and preventable tragedy. When a child falls into water, a mother who cannot swim is powerless help.

Solution

This project solves the problem by creating accessible, culturally sensitive, and empowering water safety education designed for and led by women. We will partner with local community centers to host women-only sessions at safe pools or designated, controlled natural water sites. Certified female instructors will teach not just swimming, but crucial survival skills: floating, treading water, safe rescue methods (without entering the water), and basic CPR.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact is generational change. Women trained as capable swimmers and rescuers become agents of safety within their households and communities. They are far more likely to ensure their children learn to swim, breaking the cycle of fear. The project also creates a sustainable pipeline by training local women as instructors, building in-community expertise and economic opportunity. This reduces drowning rates, fosters female empowerment & bodily autonomy & builds community resilience.
