First ever black lemur study in Lokobe

By Jasmine Taberer | Project Manager

We appreciate your ongoing support for this project.

Conserving lemurs in Madagascar is crucial for the country's biodiversity and long-term ecological health. Lemurs play a vital role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers and pollinators. This project partners with Lokobe National Park on the island of Nosy Be to research endangered and threatened endemic species, including the black lemur, hawk's sportive and mouse lemur.

We focus on SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land.

These SGD’s work towards taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems as well as sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and halting biodiversity loss.

Over the past year the first ever Black lemur behavioural study took place in Lokobe National Park to determine trends and patterns of this Critically Endangered species. The aim was to establish home range and common habits. This data is vital for the ongoing monitoring of the region and for planning of future conservation efforts.

Over 20 Rangers have also attended species identification classes which enables them to learn the species in English for guiding tourists through the forest.

Your support is vital to continue our work in Madaascar. Funds raised will go towards resources for the Rangers' classes whcih are vital for building

Your donations also go towards resources and equipment such as camera traps for the Lemur Behavioural Study.

We thank you for your support and interest in this project and look forward to providing updates on our progress,

With thanks,

The Madagascar Project team
