Childhood is getting more expensive every day: ess

By Michelle Simon | Partnerships

Baby food, as well as children's clothing and footwear have become more expensive during the months of April and May.

New data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), hit children: food for babies increased by 15.2 % so far this year, while in the last month, the price of clothing for children soared, with a rise of 13.7 %, and footwear by 7.1 %, according to published figures.

On the other hand, fundamental foods for a balanced diet such as vegetables and legumes have increased in price by 14.6 %. Foods that provide adequate nutritional intake for children, as pediatrician Cristina Alfaro Iznaola explained to Aldeas Infantiles. These numbers are not just figures, but translate into worsening conditions for Spanish households at risk of poverty and social exclusion, with minors suffering the consequences.

Impact and deterioration in children's quality of life

The situation was already alarming before the publication of these figures: 33% of Spanish children and adolescents are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to the latest report by Plataforma Infancia; moreover, the shopping basket increased by 15.2% in price in 2022 according to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU).

An emergency at home: the response of Aldeas Infantiles

With the aim of responding to this situation, Aldeas Infantiles created the Emergency at Home campaign, seeking to alleviate the inequalities suffered by children and adolescents by providing direct help to 1,000 families to meet food, energy and educational expenses. It also provides psychosocial and mental health support.
