Country Challenges: Insights from Childhood

By Michelle Simon | Project Leader

Contributions to the Spanish Sustainable Development Strategy

Drawing from our direct experience with vulnerable children and youth, especially those who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care, we contributed proposals to three key Country Challenges of Spain’s Sustainable Development Strategy, aiming to strengthen their rights and opportunities.

Challenge 1: Ending Poverty and Inequality
We emphasize access to decent housing as crucial to breaking poverty cycles for vulnerable families and youth leaving care. We propose strengthening public housing programs with targeted aid for young people, particularly in high-cost areas like Madrid and Barcelona. We also call for extending autonomy support programs until at least age 25, as 18 is too early for real independence, as confirmed by our experience and youth data.

Challenge 5: Ending Labor Precariousness
We urge comprehensive employment insertion programs for youth leaving care, combining guidance, practical training, and ongoing support. Our Youth Programs model offers professional workshops, internships, and educational re-entry support, benefiting over 500 young people in Madrid.

Challenge 6: Reversing Public Service Crisis
We advocate ensuring quality care within the protection system by fully implementing the Deinstitutionalization Strategy with adequate funding. We support the approval of the Youth and Intergenerational Justice Law as a legal framework for a fairer social contract, especially for vulnerable youth.

Towards a Truly Inclusive 2030 Agenda
The 2030 Agenda will only be transformative if it effectively includes vulnerable children and youth. Protecting their rights, amplifying their voices, and reflecting their needs in public policies is essential for sustainable, inclusive development. Our involvement in this strategy review reaffirms Aldeas Infantiles SOS’s commitment to building a fairer future where all children and youth, regardless of origin or circumstance, can thrive and participate equally in society.
