There are no better model than SADN (Societe pour le Development de Nippes), a peasant grassroot organization focussing on agriculture to maintain their community economically vibrant. The 45 members who started with a goal of planting 20,000 coffee trees surpassed their first reforrestation goal by planting more than double the number, a total of 46,760 coffee trees were planted. They proceeded on their own to plant an additional 40,000 trees for which they found a market and brought a revenue to their participant members and the community as a whole. SADN earned much respect from the community as they educated them on the need to preserve the environment and have volunteers that continually participate in their nursery building training and assist them in developing their seedlings.
SADN planted 89,217 plants in 2017 as part of the recovery efforts from Hurricane Mathew in 2016. In partnership with the Lambi Fund of Haiti they are continuing to make the effort to recover from Hurricane Mathew, which hit their community at the end of 2016.
SADN is a model for the southern communities and is clearly leading the charge in their communities in Nippes. We are more than grateful that they do not stand alone. For 2018, grassroots farming communitiesin the South Department have the following planting goals:
