In its environment priority, the goal for 2018 reforestation is 320,000 trees. Let us look at the pathway that one organization named; Organizasyon Peyizan pou developman Gwo Morn (OPDERGM).
In November 2017, the Lambi Fund entered into a partnership for the production of new seedlings in two nurseries. The contract, identified the goal to plant 20,000 and the members of OPDERGM identified the need to re-enforce the watershed and water source with trees to retain water, plant to decrease erosion. In addition we seek the tree genre that at risk to maintain the flora and fauna of the region.
The first two months the members planned each activity. The only hired 2 person (members of the organization) were the coordinating staff for the nurseries, Two persons were hired and the community volunteered to fill bacs with soil, to seed, water the growing seeds and deliver trees to community dwellers to plant strategically. In February 2018, the organization launched the project with community awareness, training. They gathered local coconut leaves, build trellis and protected the seedlings with the leaves. They planted forest and fruit trees and on these days of Konbit, where everyone labors for the good of all, members collaborated, collected and feed the working population.
As of today, OPDERGM has 17,026 new plants towards the goal of 20,000. The balance is of bags are already filled with compost. The greatest quantity of the trees are fruit like grapefruit, moringa, papaya, lemon. The members are now searching for forest tree seedling seeds to start 3000 forest trees. It takes around two months of growth in nurseries being cared for, watering, cleaning and weeding, clear insects.
Many plants are near ready for permanent placement. OPDERGM is now selecting members for the placement of the trees. But the work is just starting as we protect the plants to maturity. The follow up team will be visiting the area planted to assure the care and continued growth.
This process is being repeated in 6 other organizations and will continue into 2019 to complete 320,000 and reach its goal.
