More Water, More Trees

By Karen Ashmore | Prosect Leader

Climate change has a profound impact on environmental degradation in Haiti. Many places in the rural areas of the country do not get rain for more than a year.

As a result of the lack of rainfall, we are undergoing a situation of serious food insecurity and lack of reforestation. One of the alternatives to address hunger is to cut trees to make charcoal and sell it to earn a little money so they can provide for their families. Lambi Fund, as part of its support work with the peasants, seeks to resolve this problem through training programs to sensitize them on environmental degradation and also take action to reforest the land, and to cultivate agro-forestry fields.

In other words, increased water supply will help more trees grow.

Lambi Fund is working with ASIDC (Association of Irrigation Systems Dori) in Caravan to build four secondary irrigation canals.

This improvement work on the canals allows more land to be irrigated in better conditions, so on the irrigated perimeter that depends on these four canals, more trees are produced. More trees means more crops are being protected from being damaged by flooding and hurricanes.

With the grant from Lambi Fund, the members bought for sand, cement and other materials needed for the work such as rope, drums, buckets, wooden pallets.

The planters worked quickly and after two and a half months all the work has been completed in the four canals. The members of the Organization (women and men) participated in the achievements of the work from cleaning to draining the canal (removing grass), hauling stones, hauling water, beating mortar, etc.

The water currently flows through all the canals, allowing more land to be irrigated because the water flows faster through the canals.

The planters on the irrigated perimeter of each channel are very satisfied, it will allow them to grow more food and trees.
