Project Report | Jun 1, 2016
A new season for planting

By Marie Marthe Saint Cyr | Executive Director

In the last nine months, the 10 projects of reforrestation have met tremendous challenges to realize the goal of seeding 20,000 plants each as is required from each organization since 2006 after Hurricane Jeane devastated the planting fields and the rest of the countryside.  The challenge is a drought that has lasted seven months.  The United Nations coined it "the most devastating drought in Haiti in 35 years".  It crippled most farmers who depend on the raining season for their sesonal harvesting.  The United Nations has expressed concern on the nation capacity to feed all its people because of the drought.

Our projects are affected in many ways:  For example, MOPPAD produced more than 50,000 seedling.  They had distributes 30,000 in sites designated for planting  and 14,000 coffee plants are in the nursery growing to reach time for transplanting.  As of March 2016, the organization lost 25,000 new trees due to the drought. MOPPAD members are starting anew to capture rain for planting now and hope to reach their goal of planting 60,000 trees seven months later.

APKB:  Their nurseries produced 23,140 seedlings, because of the drought only 14,992 survived. APKB distributed 10,562 and 4,430 remains to be located on the sites selected for reflourishing.

ODEPERIB: Has established two nurseries to spread the distribution of the plants accross the localities.  They prepared 22,500 trees (mango, avocado) and they are growing in the nursery and soon to be planted.  The rain has begun, unfortunately in some locations with so much intensity that we have yet to be able to re-establish the planting pattern in many areas.

It is our hope to continue planting to reach our current goals however late in the season to come.  We are grateful for a new season and your support is essential to our continued success.  Thank you so much for your patience and solidarity with the peasant farmers in rural Haiti.
