Reaching Out to Support More Mamas

By Liz Welch | Executive Director

One example of our Social Media
One example of our Social Media

This past year, Mama Dragons has used social media as a critical tool to amplify our mission, share accurate information, and reach mothers who may not yet know that support exists for their LGBTQ+ children. At a time when misinformation and fear-based narratives are widespread, telling truthful, human-centered stories has never been more important.

A Values-Driven Shift in Platform Strategy

As part of our commitment to creating and sustaining safe, values-aligned spaces, Mama Dragons made the intentional decision to step away from Twitter and establish a stronger presence on Bluesky. This shift reflected our belief that where and how we show up publicly matters—especially for families who are already navigating fear, stigma, or isolation.

Bluesky has allowed us to engage in conversations that center dignity, care, and credible information, while maintaining alignment with our mission to protect and uplift LGBTQ+ youth and their families.

Meeting Mothers Where They Are

Although Mama Dragons stepped away from Facebook as a support platform, it remains a vital entry point for many mothers who are just beginning to seek information and reassurance. Our continued presence on Facebook allows families to find us and then be guided into safer, vetted spaces for deeper connection and support.

At the same time, engagement on Instagram is at an all-time high, with stories resonating widely and reaching new audiences. In the year ahead, we plan to build on this momentum by incorporating more live video content from the places where Mama Dragons is actively working—bringing families into real moments of education, advocacy, and community-building as they happen.

Storytelling That Breaks Through

Through donor-supported outreach, Mama Dragons has been able to elevate stories that resonate deeply with parents across the country. Several of our posts have gone viral—not because of outrage, but because they tell the honest stories of families living through the affirming process and navigating what it means to love and support their children in a challenging climate.

These stories highlight:

  • Parents learning how to affirm their children with confidence

  • Families finding community after years of isolation

  • The tangible impact Mama Dragons has on mental health, resilience, and hope

Viral reach has allowed our message to travel far beyond our immediate community, helping parents recognize themselves in these stories and realize they are not alone.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Reach Where It’s Needed Most

New donations to this project will allow Mama Dragons to expand beyond organic reach by:

  • Accessing new media tools and platforms

  • Strategically boosting posts to reach mothers outside of progressive or affirming spaces

  • Intentionally placing our message into more conservative communities, where support and accurate information are often hardest to find

Our goal is not to persuade through conflict, but to reach parents quietly searching for answers—those who may be scared, unsure, or alone, and who need to see that affirming support exists.

Why This Work Matters

Social media is often the first place a parent encounters information about LGBTQ+ identities. By showing up with compassion, credibility, and real stories, Mama Dragons is helping shape safer entry points for families at the very beginning of their journey.

Thank you for supporting outreach that meets families where they are and helps them find their way to connection, education, and hope.
