We are pleased to bring you updates about the current situation regarding LGBT rights in Tanzania.
In recent weeks the government of Tanzania has undertaken a campaign to demoralize and condemn LGBT individuals and organizations
The Ministry of Health has imposed a partial ban on the sale of lubricants to discourage gay men from having sex. The Ministry of Health personnel are also spreading homophobia via social media and other platforms.
The regional commissioner for Dar es Salaam has threatened to use social media platforms to identify and arrest those suspected of being gay. Police have arrested at least 20 men outside bars and clubs popular with the LGBT community. Although they have been released, they face charges of prostitution and loitering.
Justice Minister announced new plans to suspend registration of any charity or nongovernmental organization that supports or advocates for LGBT people
Our organization is working tirelessly to keep doors open and services available to the LGBT community. We are advocating for reversal of the recent actions that have been taken against the LGBT community, full and equal legal rights, and increasing acceptance of LGBT people. However, the government is determined to de-register our organization to stop these vital services and advocacy from reaching LGBT people.
We are in the process of filing a legal case to protect LGBT Voice and other organizations that support the LGBT community in Tanzania, but are struggling to cover for legal fees..
We have also started an online campaign to create awareness about the current situation and also mobilize support from both local and international organizations working for the interests and general well-being of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people.
The organization is also providing training to LGBT individuals on organizational, informational and personal security
Together we can stop this movement to intimidate and subvert the LGBT community. Every one of us must act to show support for LGBT people, to fight for equal protection under the law, and to end homophobia within our families, communities, and nation. Share messages of support and join us by tagging #EqualityinTanzania and #LGBTinTanzania
For security reasons we are not sharing photos of the beneficiary of our projects
A comment from Maliki:
I`m afraid of what is going to happen to me and other LGBT people in the country because the government’s ongoing efforts to subvert LGBT individuals and supporters threaten the wellbeing of LGBT community and organizations, including LGBT Voice.
