Progress report

By Maria Mdenda | Fundraising and Advocacy Manager

I am happy to bring this report to you, even though we are in a difficult wave of crackdown on homosexuality in the country, the situation of LGBT+ rights is worsening day after day, including arbitrary arresting LGBT+ people just because of who they are, detaining them for weeks, last month  a court in Dar es salaam ordered three suspects of homosexuality to undergo anal examination without considering that the act would , humiliate them,  one person in Kilwa  was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison and a lesbian in Geita  mercilessly  murdered by unknown people just because she was a lesbian

These recent events show how dangerous it is to be LGBT+ in our communities due to that many LGBT+ people have gone hiding because they fear of being arrested or any other violence

As an organization we are still a strong institution and will continue to serve the LGBT+ community all the time without fear, because we have good and committed lawyers who are ready to ensure that LGBT+ people are safe and happy, our work will never be threatened by homophobes. In spite of all that, we have continued to implement the KUISHI project as well as providing emergency services to the needy LGBT+, we are still sending lawyers to the courts to defend the accused LGBT+ individuals and provide bail where necessary without delay The needs have increased, especially for legal and emergency services for LGBT+ who are detained in police stations, and also to provide trauma therapy for victims of torture.

We have identified three organizations that are working to gethether to implement KUISHI Project will ensure an increase in respect/inclusion for diverse communities,

measurable increase in media, reports, news regarding tolerance and respect for diversity; demonstrated increase in public support among stakeholders for visibility and empowerment of diverse and marginalized communities; Demonstrated increase in acceptance and tolerance of distinct perspectives and LGBTQI persons among family and community; demonstrated reduction of hateful rhetoric and discriminatory attitudes in media, political speech, and social events

Our services are now becoming more limited because of the shortage of funding especially starting from the month of January till now; fundraising has been very difficult,  we have accumulated debts to our service providers, including lawyers and office rent, we appeal  for your immediate help so that we can continue serving our community.
