Help defend and protect LGBTQ+ rights in Tanzania

First quarter progress report

By James Wandera Ouma | Executive Director

I am excited to present this report detailing the work that has been accomplished over the past few months, highlighting both successes and setbacks. Thank you for being a part of our journey towards promoting equality in Tanzania. The support we have received has allowed LGBT Voice Tanzania to continue assisting hundreds of LGBTQ individuals in the country.
Although there may be a decrease in political noise recently, the overall environment has not changed. Unfortunately, instances of arrest, detention, and torture of LGBTQ individuals persist, along with an increase in the expulsion of LGBTQ youth from educational institutions. At LGBT Voice Tanzania, we remain dedicated to ensuring that no one suffers discrimination based on their sexual orientation.
Regarding our programs:
  • Legal Assistance:
Legal aid has become a crucial necessity since 2018, with 78 cases handled nationwide in the past three months. These cases involved the unjust arrest and charges of 78 LGBTQ individuals for homosexuality-related offenses. Through the provision of legal representation, we were able to secure the release of many individuals due to lack of evidence in the charges. It is concerning that unjust arrests are on the rise, often driven by law enforcement seeking bribes for the release of LGBTQ individuals.
  • Essential trauma counseling services:
Due to the rise in arrests, detention, and violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity, our organization has been providing essential trauma counseling services for LGBTQ individuals. Over 123 individuals have already received counseling, but the lack of resources poses a challenge in reaching those in need countrywide. We often rely on mobile phones to communicate with those who are far away.

  • Safe space and relocation
In terms of safe space and relocation, while we have received numerous requests for assistance, limited funding has only allowed us to help 3 LGBTQ individuals. Thanks to the generous support from our donors, these individuals are now safe and beginning new lives free from fear.
  • Advocacy and Awareness:
Advocacy and awareness efforts have been hindered this quarter due to limited resources. However, our action plan includes conducting two advocacy campaigns before June if we receive the necessary funding. Our current needs include improving access to legal services for LGBTQ individuals facing unjust arrests, enhancing mental health resources and counseling, and investing in research and training for data-driven solutions.
  • Organization Needs:
To ensure the continuity of LGBT Voice Tanzania in advocating for LGBTQ rights and supporting the community, increased funding is essential. This funding would cover expenses such as safe office space, legal aid fees, training, research, advocacy activities, mental health services, staff allowances, and the purchase of computers.
Your ongoing support is crucial in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all in Tanzania. We are grateful for your contributions that help us accelerate our advocacy efforts, awareness campaigns, and support services.
