Project Summary
This project, led by LGBT Voice Tanzania, is dedicated to protecting the human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Tanzania, a country where anti-LGBTQ+ laws and social discrimination create constant threats to safety and dignity. Through donor support, the project delivers critical services, advocacy, and capacity-building to vulnerable community members and activists on the frontlines.
How Donations Have Been Used
Thanks to generous contributions, the project has been able to strategically invest in the following key areas:
Immediate support for individuals facing threats, including safe space, legal representation, emergency medical care, and trauma counseling. Over the past three months, 32+ individuals received urgent help preventing homelessness, unlawful detention, or violence.
Supported legal defense efforts for arrested LGBTQ+ persons and engaged in discreet advocacy with local authorities and allies to reduce harm. The project contributed to successful release in at least 15 critical cases.
Conducted workshops and training sessions for 50+ activists and community leaders, enhancing skills in rights advocacy, mental health support, and community organizing despite hostile environments.
Held discreet, one-on-one engagements with local and religious leaders to foster dialogue and reduce hostility toward LGBTQ+ individuals. Additionally, implemented low-profile awareness campaigns designed to educate communities on LGBTQ+ rights and reduce stigma—successfully reaching thousands via secure, encrypted digital platforms..
Key Achievements
Real Impact on Lives
This project has gone far beyond offering emergency aid—it has become a vital source of resilience, dignity, and empowerment for Tanzania’s LGBTQ+ community. For many individuals, the support they received meant the difference between life and death, or between hiding in fear and stepping into a safer, more hopeful future.
Beneficiaries frequently express that, through this project, they felt seen, protected, and valued for the first time in their lives. The sense of isolation and helplessness many carried has been replaced by a growing belief in their right to exist freely and with dignity.
In parallel, the project has cultivated a stronger, more capable network of LGBTQ+ activists across the country. These trained individuals now serve as first responders in times of crisis—offering legal referrals, psychosocial support, and safe housing options. They are also challenging discrimination at the grassroots level by sensitizing their communities, organizing in safe ways, and amplifying queer voices through local and digital platforms.
This growing collective strength is laying the foundation for long-term social change, even in the face of criminalization and societal hostility. Every life touched by this project brings the movement one step closer to justice and equality in Tanzania.
Here's a powerful and heartfelt quote from an LGBTQ+ individual helped by LGBT Voice Tanzania:
“When I was arrested, I thought my life was over. I was scared, alone, and treated like a criminal just for being who I am. But LGBT Voice Tanzania stood by me when no one else would. They found me a lawyer, made sure I was safe, and helped me walk free. The charges were dropped—but more importantly, I got my dignity back. I will never forget what they did for me.”

Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the progress made so far is both inspiring and life-changing, the reality on the ground remains deeply challenging. LGBTQ+ individuals in Tanzania continue to live under the threat of criminalization, societal rejection, and violence. Harsh laws, deeply rooted stigma, and fear-driven silence make everyday life unsafe—and for many, survival depends on immediate access to shelter, legal protection, and psychosocial support.
The demand for emergency assistance and legal defense is growing faster than the available resources. Each day, new pleas for help arrive from individuals facing arrest, eviction, assault, or isolation—many with nowhere else to turn.
Now more than ever, sustained donor support is not just helpful—it is vital. Your continued generosity ensures that this life-saving work doesn’t stop. It enables us to protect those in danger, amplify the voices of the unheard, and equip a brave and growing network of LGBTQ+ activists with the tools to create lasting change.
The road ahead is long, but with your support, we will keep moving forward—one life, one voice, and one act of courage at a time.
How You Can Continue to Help
Your support isn’t just a donation—it’s a lifeline.
Every contribution fuels emergency shelter for someone fleeing violence, legal defense for those unjustly arrested, mental health care for survivors, and training that empowers activists to lead change in their own communities. It allows us to reach people who are hidden, scared, and silenced—and remind them they are not alone.
By giving today, you become part of a global movement standing up for justice, dignity, and equality in one of the most challenging environments for LGBTQ+ people.
Together, we can protect lives, restore hope, and build a future where everyone is free to live as they are.
